The collision between the Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) train and the Arakonam-Katpadi passenger train took at least nine lives; the Railway Ministry has said that human-error could have led to the collision.

The stationary Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger was crashed from behind by the Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) train. The Railway has pointed out that the driver of MEMU train jumped signals and went over speed.

The sources reported that the driver was running the train at the speed of 90 KM p/h where the maximum allowed speed was 15 KM p/h. The train driver is injured and in deep shock, unable to narrate the cause of accident, he is admitted to a government hospital at Chennai.

The Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi said “Cause of the accident has not been ascertained at the moment. According to the initial reports, the signal was red. But whatever is the reason it should have never happened. We learn lessons from every accident. We have to ensure accident should not happen.” Dinesh Trivedi was pointing out the cause of accident as human error.

As some people died in this accident among the dead are also the guards of the stationary train as well as a station master of nearby Wallajabad, these people were on their routine work.
