In the ownership of Rupert Murdoch, Star Group, won the television rights of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the next six years on Monday.
The deal that finalized on Monday also includes mobile and internet rights for the next 96 matches and is worth $750 million. The deal won by Star Group was against Sony and also includes matches played in home and domestic cricket such as Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Raniji Trophy. The Star Group will be paying Rs. 40 crore for each international match, which is a lot higher than what Nimbus was paying before their contract expired.
The President of the BCCI N Shrinivasan spoke to the media and said, “The BCCI is very happy with the deal. Now the media rights have been fully evaluated and fully priced with Star coming out with such a deal. Following a transparent process of verifying the eligibility of each bidder, the winner was chosen.”
Star Group won the rights in corporation with ESPNCricinfo up till 2008.
The Chief Executive Officer of Star Group in India Uday Shankar said, “I thank the BCCI for awarding Star the broadcast rights. In association with ESPN, we are confident of giving a great coverage to Indian cricket. We already have the channels. If there is a need to open another channel, we can always explore it.”
