The Health Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai was questioned by DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng on his free car registration number plate whereas the Johor Sultan had to pay for it. At first Liow said he did not know who paid for the number plate for him but later on, he claimed that it was for free.
Liow said he was notified by the Road Transport Department that WWW15 car registration number would be issued free. For the registration number, he won the bid for RM 24,200, based on the department’s website that uploaded the list of winning tenders.
According to Liow, the number plate he had bought was for his official car.
Liow was questioned by the DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng for his car registration number that he got it free whereas Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Sultan Iskandar of Johor had to pay for his car number plate. This was in contrast to Sultan of Johor who successfully bid for the registration number WWW 1 for RM 520,000 beating some other 10,000 bidders.
Liow wanted to comment on the affair as he was questioned for his car number plate. “I have received official notification from the department that the number plate is free. There is no payment involved. Any further questions please refer to RTD. TQ,” he posted on the Twitter.
The Penang chief minister who was accompanied by State Public Works, Utilities and Transport Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng, Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow and Seberang Prai Municipal Council secretary Rozali Mohamud, said he was flabbergasted on the matter and asked the Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha to enlighten the issue as to why Liow got the registration number without any payment from the Road Transport Department. He said at the conference that “This is double standards because Liow can get but others can’t”.
