District Election Commissioner (DEC) Quetta was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday. Satellite Town police official Tanvir Ahmed said DEC Ziaullah Qasmi was on his way back from work when armed men followed his rickshaw and opened fire near Chandni Chowk. The rickshaw driver, who sustained minor injuries, attempted to shift the severely injured DEC to hospital. Qasmi succumbed to injuries in Civil Hospital Quetta.

According to police surgeon Dr Noor Baloch, Qasmi had received over four bullets and could not survive due to excessive bleeding. Balochistan Election Commissioner Syed Sultan Bayazid said Qasmi belonged to Sargodah city of the Punjab. He told the journalists that Qasmi owned a personal car but somehow always preferred riding an auto-rickshaw for coming to the office and going home. Balochistan Home Secretary Captain (r) Akbar Hussain Durrani said the police department has launched an investigation which will further shed light on the motive of this murder.

Reportedly, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has strongly condemned the incident and claimed that the government was determined to eradicating militancy from the country. CEC Justice (r) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim and other members of election commission have expressed their deep sorrow and grief on the tragic death of Muhammad Zia Ullah Qasmi.

“In his passing away, the ECP has lost a dutiful and vigilant officer who served the ECP with exemplary commitment and distinction,” said the commission.
