The Supreme Court of India lifted a travel ban on the Italian ambassador Daniele Mancini on Tuesday. The court also directed the Centre to take immediate steps for setting up a special court to hold proceedings against Italian marines.

The ban was a reaction to Italy’s refusal to return Italian marines to face trial for killing Indian fishermen. The two Italian marines were only allowed to go home for a certain period of time; however, once they were returned, Italy went back on its words.

Earlier, Ambassador Mancini assured Indian judiciary that the two Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, will return to India to face trial. The travel ban on Ambassador Mancini led to howls of protest from Italy and the European Union.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir directed the listing of the matter on April 16 so that the government could inform it about the steps it has taken for setting up the fast track court. The attorney general told the court that various steps have been taken in accordance with the January 18 order and correspondence in this regard was also going on.

The two marines were boarding an Italian commercial vessel against Somali pirates when they shot two Indian fishermen dead. The incident took place in February 2012. According to the marines, the fishermen were mistaken as pirates and they had to shoot in defense. Both parties agree that the Indian fishermen were killed by Italian marines.
