The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has cut ex-PM Raja Parvez some slack by excluding his name from the reference pertaining to the notorious Rental Power Projects (RPPs) case to the NAB chairman. The Rawalpindi chapter of Bureau has also allegedly excluded the names of some other influential figures.

Reportedly, NAB Chairman Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari has signed the reference which is expected to be filed before the Accountability Court Rawalpindi on May 27. Officials told the media that the former prime minister has been given relaxation only until he submits a written reply to the Bureau by June 3.

According to NAB officials, Ashraf has failed to appear for investigation due to frail health. The Bureau is expecting his written reply and the decision whether to include his name in the reference would be taken after analyzing his response. In case the reply is deemed unsatisfactory, a supplementary reference containing his name would be submitted before the accountability court.

Ashraf has been time and again requested to cooperate and justify his involvement in the corrupt practices and abused authority while awarding an RPP contract (Naudero-II) to Walters Power International.

NAB has been investigating several cases which involve influential figures; hence, such cases have been deferred and hampered with high frequency. As a matter of fact, the prospective Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif might soon have to face three corruption references – Ittefaq foundries, the Raiwind assets and Hudaibia paper mills.
