The twenty heroes who lost their lives during rescue operations in Uttarakhand are finally being put to rest on Friday. The men died in a Mi-17 helicopter crash while providing services to people strangled in flood-ravaged areas. Sources confirm that remains of 19 men have been recovered while one remains missing.
“20 people belonging to National Disaster Response Force (nine), Indo Tibetan Border Police (six) and five from Indian Air Force will be a given Guard of Honor today at 12.30 pm in Dehradun,” Vice Chairman of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) M. Shashidhar Reddy said.
Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde are scheduled to attend the ceremonial services. Earlier, Uttarakhand CM announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased. Wing Commander Darryl Castelino, Flight Lieutenant K Praveen, Junior Warrant Officer AK Singh, Sargent Sudhakar Yadav and Flight Lieutenant Tapan Kapoor were among the deceased.
Meanwhile, the Pawan Hans helicopter made an emergency landing in Harsil town due to a technical fault on Friday. No casualties or loss of life has been reported till the filing of this report.
“There is no report of any casualties in this incident. The private chopper at the time of landing developed a technical fault, made an emergency landing,” Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) spokesperson Deepak Kumar Pandey said.
