Pilot of the crashed Indian Air Force jet has been reported dead on Monday. A MiG-21 Bison fighter aircraft of IAF crashed while landing at Uttarlai airbase. The Flight Lieutenant had taken off the aircraft for routine training sortie while it crashed in Rajasthan’s Barmer district.

IAF issued a statement reading: “One MiG-21 Bison crashed at the Uttarlai airbase at about 0930 hours. The pilot sustained fatal injuries.”

Accidents of IAF aircrafts have become very common and controversial in India. A number of young fighter pilots have lost their lives to these incidents. Defence Ministry spokesperson in Jodhpur Colonel S.D. Goswami has confirmed that a Court of Inquiry will help reveal hard facts about this recent incident.

A similar incident happened in June but the pilots had managed to survive. A MiG-21 plane that flew from the same airbase had leveled but there were no casualties reported. The IAF had inducted over 900 MiG-21s, half of which were lost in different crashes.

The incident on Monday marks the sixth crash involving an IAF aircraft while it is the second MiG-21 that has crashed this year.
