Execution of Manganlal Barela has been reprieved on Supreme Court’s orders. Barela is accused of killing his daughters and was to be hanged on Thursday morning. Barela beheaded his daughters in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh.

Chief justice P Sathasivam announced the court verdict upholding the stay on Barela’s execution until further orders. On Wednesday, members of People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) approached the Chief Justice and convinced him to stay the execution for a day.

“We received the orders last night about the stay,” said SS Sengar, Jailor, Jabalpur Central Jail, where Maganlal is currently imprisoned.

Barela was found guilty of beheading his daughters Leela, Savita, Arti, Phool Kanwar and Jamuna. The eldest, Leela, was six years old while the youngest, Jamuna, was one year old. Barela beheaded his children over a property dispute.

“We will be happy if the death sentence is turned into a life sentence. We don’t know what happened in 2010,” said Maganlal’s brother.

Barela was charged under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. Barela was previously scheduled to be hanged on February 3, 2011. His plea for mercy was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee on July 22, 2013.

“Maganlal’s appeal was dismissed by the Supreme Court in just a one line order and his mercy was also rejected and there was no due process of law followed,” said Rishab Sancheti, lawyer of the rights group.
