The drought over these past few weeks triggered fires in three places at the peak of Penang Hill late yesterday. The 833m forest hill fires covered three spots that could be seen from miles away. The Penang Fire and Rescue Departments director Azmi Tamat informed that the department was alerted towards the fires by a few members of the public at around 6 pm.

“A team of 20 firemen from the Jalan Perak and Bagan Jermal stations were sent to two of the locations,” he stated when inquired about the fires. Azmi Tamat further added that the fire-fighters took more than 12 hours to extinguish the increasing flames at the two locations on the hill. The difficulty was caused after they were hampered by the lack of water. “We had to use backpack sprays,” he informed, adding that they were in the midst of putting out one more fire. Thick smoke was covering the sky above and was was visible from even 10 kilometres away. 30,000 residents are believed to be affected by the fires and smoke.

“We’re now monitoring the situation from the air (in helicopters) and are looking into ways to prevent the forest fires from spreading as the heat is worsening and it is quite windy. The team of firemen went up the hill at about 8pm last night to look for the source of the fire but faced difficulties as there are no proper routes up to put out the fires so we resorted to using backpack sprayers. For now we’re doing everything we can to control the situation from getting worse,” Azmi said keeping the media updated.
