After this Tuesday the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings look worse and higher than usual from this Tuesday, even if the air quality remains the same. This is due to the updated PSI reporting system that has started to include the fine particles in Singapore’s air from this Tuesday. The National Environment Agency informed that it aims to give people a more accurate picture of air quality, so that they are better able to respond to it.

As part of the change, the agency will publish the concentration of fine particulates in the air every hour. These particulates, called PM2.5, will also be factored into the existing three-hour average index. PM2.5 has also been added as a sixth pollutant in the 24-hour reporting system. NEA said this would bring the overall PSI number up, even though the actual concentration of pollutants is unchanged. The change was implemented to simplify the readings, said Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan, when announcing the changes in his ministry’s budget debate last month.

This system will allow Singapore to get accurate readings of the air quality and allow Singaporeans to make better adjustments to the fast changing weather conditions.
