A Lahore session court judge this Saturday finally disposed off attempt to murder charges against a nine-month-old toddler, informed the defence lawyers today.

On 1st of February, a case was registered against a family which included the baby named Musa Khan and other inhabitants of Muslim Town for an alleged attack on a bailiff and the team of the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) for raiding the area to arrest gas and electricity bill defaulters. Earlier this April, baby Musa was granted a confirmed bail against Rs50,000 bail bonds. On expiry of the bail period this Saturday, Musa was carried to the court in the lap of his grandfather. “Police told the court that the nomination of Musa in the case of attacking police and gas company officials was a human error and Musa is not required,” defense lawyer Irfan Sadiq informed a foreign news agency.

Musa’ s grandfather, Muhammad Yasin, and his three sons still face the charges. The court has also issued a show-cause notice to a policeman over ‘dereliction of duty’. Registration of a case of attempted murder against the nine-month-old cast an international spotlight on Pakistan’s dysfunctional justice system. The minimum age for a charge like this against a child is twelve years, clearly not known by the policemen who brought Musa along. Pictures taken by the foreign news agencies at an earlier court hearing of Musa crying as he was being fingerprinted provoked widespread ridicule of Pakistans judicial system all over the world. This made the provincial officials take notice of the incident and call for an inquiry.
