The Federal Parliament paid their last respects to the late wife of the ex-Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, Margaret Whitlam after her death in Sydney on Saturday.

Margaret Whitlam was 92-years-old at the time of her death and known for her active participation in public matters. The current Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard headed the condolences of the former late Ms. Whitlam in the parliament house which burst several other members of the parliament into tears remembering what a complete leader Mrs. Whitlam was.

At the last respect ceremony Ms. Gillard said, “Many accomplished women owe their success to the courage and inspiration they drew from Margaret at a time when so much was needed to be done and so many barriers stood in their way. As a girl in high school during the Whitlam government, I will remember the image that Margaret gave to the nation, and it was one of the first times Australian women saw so publicly a woman who was part of a partnership but was accomplished in her own right.”

Keeping in mind the contributions made by Margaret to the public service of the country, Gillard proposed an exception to the federal law and offered the Whitlam family a state funeral to which the family respectfully withdrew saying the arrangements have already been completed by the family members.
