“Captain Emad” also known as Abu Khalid left Australia on Tuesday night, a night after allegations against him aired on Four Corners. It was confirmed by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) that it has been inquiring people-smuggling operations for two years in Australia. And according to Commissioner Tony Negus who said in the press today that Captain Emad was involved in people-smuggling.
Mr. Negus said that Captain Emad had left Australia on Tueday night. He added, “The AFP investigation will continue”, “this is all part of an ongoing investigation.” He said in a message to alarmed Indonesian authorities that people-smuggling was a crime which was treated severely by the AFP. It was reported on Monday, that in 2010 at least six agents of people-smuggling came to Australia on a boat posing as genuine refuge seekers.
The Federal opposition said that Captain Emad would not have been able to departure from the country if he had been on a temporary protection visa.
Scott Morrison, the opposition immigration spokesperson said Captain Emad’s escape from Australia, which could not be prevented because of insufficient evidence into his alleged people smuggling activities from Indonesia was questioned by the Gillard government.
Mr. Negus said “We certainly haven’t given up on looking at this particular group of people, and if the evidence is there they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law”.
There were more than 12 current active inquiries in process working with 100 investigators in the country and offshore. 12 organizers have already been taken into police custody in Australia and two kingpins had been extradited from Indonesia.
