Canberra turns 100 as the city is filled with colors and joy. Attendance of over 100,000 is expected on Monday’s events, which kicked off at midday with some family fun word art. Vibrant entertainment is all over the place, while school choirs and opera singers took to the lake serenading the crowd as they drifted by.
“I guess we get national attention for different reasons. Tomorrow gives us the opportunity to show people what a soul Canberra has. That’s what I think the community day is tomorrow. The actual birthday on Tuesday is going to be a little bit more formal in terms of ceremonies, but tomorrow is the day everyone can show the rest of Australia this is who we are, this is our home and we love it,” said Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.
Canberra’s official birthday is Tuesday March 12, but the city was celebrating with a public holiday and festivities on Monday. On Tuesday, there will be a formal ceremony at the Foundation Stones in front of Parliament House, attended by ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, Governor-General Quentin Bryce and Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Canberra will also enjoy the premiere of a specially commissioned Canberra Symphony on the lawns of Old Parliament House.
Composer Andrew Shultz said: “I spent some time wondering whether the finish was too big. I think some of the players might have once or twice thought I’ve asked too much of them. But no, its a very, very big ending, the last couple of minutes are very jubilant.”
