The survivors of a deadly attack on trekkers in Papua New Guinea arrived in Port Moresby on Wednesday. Two Australian porters lost their lives along the Black Cat Track in Morobe province on Tuesday. PNG police spokesman Dominic Kakas confirmed that two porters were killed and four trekkers were badly assaulted.

“One of the expatriates was speared through the left leg, one was slashed on the arm, another suffered severe lacerations to the head and another also had severe cuts. Some of the other porters were more seriously injured… There were six in the mob that attacked them. One had a rifle, another a home-made gun, as well as bush knives and spears,” he said.

The group of trekkers was resting in their camps when they were attacked. The injured trekkers were rushed to Wau for medical assistance while the porters were airlifted to Lae. PNG Prime Minister Peter O’Neill termed the incident as a major setback to the tourism industry. He promised the victims’ families to bring them justice. Director of trekking company Kokoda Historical, David Howell, who also knew one of the porters, says he was shocked to hear about the incident.

“I was going about my morning routine and got a call, we actually have a trek going over the Kokoda Track at the moment. I immediately called my contacts up in the Black Cat area and they informed me that one of those porters was a porter that I know very well and I used, and who accompanied me across the Black Cat Trail only several months ago, so very very sad news,” he said.
