A parenting website Mumsnet has found through a poll that 83 percent of the victimized women do not report sexual assault to the police.

Mumsnet has ran the poll as part of its We Believe You  awareness campaign, aims to support sexual assault victims through emphasizing that the women are reluctant to report such crime cases for the reasons of not getting believed in return, embarrassment and shame.

The online poll has revealed the facts that among 1,600 respondents 10 percent had been raped and 35 percent had suffered a sexual assault attempt. Out of those, 23 percent reported having been suffered sexual assault multiple times.

Rape Crisis charity worker, Katie Russell has told that the survey results reflect the fact that despite being working directly with women from decades, rape and sexual violence is still widespread. The victims that successfully survived used to contact Rape Crisis and not to the police. Regardless of the improvements that have been brought in the police procedures, sexual violence sufferers still lack confidence in the courts and legal system.

A Home Office spokesman has told that the government is making an investment of £10.5m in rape support centres across the U.K. over the next three years’ span. The spokesperson has said that every victim should have full confidence that they will be treated with dignity and that any allegation will be investigated thoroughly.

The Crown Prosecution Service has said that the poll results are evident why it is important for victims to come forward and report to help in achieving more successful convictions.

This attempt has been made by Mumsnet to challenge the so-called “persistent myths that help to make society less sympathetic” and stop victims from reporting criminal attacks.
