Shafilea AhmedA couple who killed their “westernised” teenage daughter as they thougnt of her bringing the shame on the family have been convicted of her murder – nine years after the brutal killing.

The 17-year-old girl went missing from her home in Warrington, Cheshire, in 2003 and her dead body was found on the banks of the River Kent in Cumbria six months later.

Shafilea went missing on 11 September 2003 and was reported missing by a teacher afterv one week of absence. Police made several appeals to find her. A group of workmen found her decomposed remains in February 2004 and she was identified by her dental records and jewellery.

Two post-mortem examinations failed to determine how she died but a verdict of unlawful killing was recorded at her inquest in 2008. Police investigating the murder were so convinced that her parents had killed the teenager they “bugged” the family home to listen in on their conversations.

In the recordings, Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed appeared to know that they might be under surveillance and feared their phones had been tapped. They were also heard discussing how they could get away with murder and how to get benefit from media.

Iftikhar Ahmed, 52, and his wife Farzana, 49, of Liverpool Road, Warrington, Cheshire, suffocated Shafilea, 17, with a plastic bag in 2003 what seems to be an event of “honour killing”.

Shafilea’s sister, Alesha told the jury at Chester Crown Court her parents pushed Shafilea onto the settee in their house and she heard her mother say “just finish it here” as they forced a plastic bag into the teenager’s mouth and killed her in front of her siblings.

Ater hearing the verdicts, Mr. Justice Roderick Evans said he would pass sentence at this afternoon.
