Deputy PM, Nick CleggThe Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg has suggested to strip off a range of benefits being enjoyed by the wealthy pensioners, in his speech about “a strong economy and a fair society” at the 5th anniversary of his election as the Liberal Democrats’ leader.

Earlier, Prime Minister David Cameron had promised to protect the “universal” benefits for above 65s before the next general election 2015 but many Tories are keen for the reform to take place now. Mr. Clegg is pressurizing Mr. Cameron to ditch his promise in order to establish a “fair” system. He has argued that it would be injustice to keep on providing certain benefits to better off pensioners who do not “need” them.

Mr. Clegg has also previously supported the commitment to preserve the allowances in their 2010 Coalition Agreement. Now, he is rethinking over the matter to initiate and cut the benefits before 2015 elections with the agreement of Mr. Prime Minister.

Currently, winter fuel allowance, free prescriptions, TV licences and free bus passes are attributed to all pensioners. The winter fuel allowance is of £200 for pensioners and £300 for those above 80 years old. This move would make the wealthy pensioners to lose these benefits.

Deputy PM has deeply acknowledged that certain changes had at times been “painful and controversial”, but the Liberal Democrats had ensured to remain firmly on the political centre ground. A welfare system means to benefit those at the lowest level, and without reforming it, the principle of welfare may lead to “total collapse” in public support.
