The Foreign Office is said to be investigating reports claiming that a British aid worker has been killed in Gaza this weekend.

The killing was reported to happen in southern Gaza city of Rafah on Sunday.

According to the recent estimates, around 1,800 Palestinians, most of them civilians, are said to have been killed in Gaza during the escalated conflict with Israel in July. Sixty-seven Israelis have died, all but three soldiers.

A Foreign Office spokesman has said: “We are aware of the reports of the death of a British national in Rafah and are urgently looking into them.”

A seven-hour “humanitarian window” announced by Israel in parts of Gaza has ended which did not include Rafah.

The worker is believed to be Kadir Islam from the Lancashire town of Rochdale but the verification process of Foreign Office has not completed the verification process now.

If the claims on killing of a British national in Gaza will be confirmed, then it would be the first death of a British national and the second death of a foreign national following a Thai civilian working in Israel – in the four-week conflict.

The Prime Minister David Cameron has said the apparent death of the Rochdale man in an Israeli air strike emphasised the need for “an immediate unconditional humanitarian ceasefire observed properly by both sides”.

Mr Cameron has stated: “I’m extremely concerned about these reports and we are doing everything we can to get to the bottom (of them) and find out exactly what has happened.

“I don’t want to say anything before we’ve been able to do that but this only reinforces the need for an immediate unconditional humanitarian ceasefire observed properly by both sides.”

The PM has also added: “This slaughter, this killing has got to end.”
