Sidney / North Saanich RCMP are advising the users of Horth Hill Regional Park, as well as residents around the park, that two separate cougar sightings have been reported.

The last sighting was on June 26, 2011, in the area of Oriole Lane in North Saanich. This sighting was reported to the RCMP via email, on July 2nd. What appears to be an adult cougar was observed on security video footage in a resident’s back yard.

Another sighting was reported on June 10, 2011 by someone walking their dog in the park, near Willow Lane. The Conservation Service and the Capital Regional District have been advised. Signs will be posted to alert park users.

These recent sightings suggest that one or more of these cats may be present in the area. Residents and park users should take the necessary precautions, to ensure they minimize the chance of interaction with a cougar. Closely supervise young children and pets, stay to well travelled routes, and avoid travelling alone.
