Golden Gate_Bridge_San_FranciscoThe Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco is undergoing maintenance as for the first time since its inception in 1937, the two major cables of the bridge are being completely repainted. The work for this bridge has been in process for a couple of months now and it has been reported that right after 10th September, the bridge will be open again to the bikers. However, the bridge will be closed to pedestrians until January 2012.

Since 31st May the western span of the bridge which was set aside primarily for the bikers, was undergoing seismic retrofitting,  and was thus unavailable to the city’s bikers. However, the maintenance completed earlier than expected and now that the work has been wrapped up, the bikers can access the golden gate bridge in early September, rather than at the end of the month.

According to the bridge officials the runners, walkers and other perambulators will be unable to cross San Francisco to Marin till January 2012. The pedestrians are requested to turn around at the north tower to get to Marin County.

While the bikers will be able to travel across to Marin, they will be required to walk their bikes in selected portions since maintenance work is still in full throttle. It has also been advised that great caution must be practiced while crossing the bridge from 7.00 am to 3.30 p.m as this constitutes the working hours for the crew members.

The time duration for this paint job is stretched over four years. Work has also suffered earlier owing to the heavy fog which did much harm to the painting job as the paint did not stick to the cables owing to the vapor.
