While Canadians in general are suffering through significant layoffs and recession, federal service employees are earning over $100,000 annually, says a recent report.

According to the documents, 22,674 employees were receiving salary of over five figures in the year preceding the beginning of economic crisis in September 2008. Last year, this number rose to 42,050.

Apparently, this jump is due to Conservatives’ efforts to realize an ambitious cost-cutting program, which according to them will decrease by $4 billion the amount of money the federal government spends yearly.

“The increase in the number of public service employees who earn more than $100,000 can fluctuate wildly from one year to the next,” wrote Lindblad.

Nonetheless, the documents do not shed light on the data before 2004, when similar collective agreements were conferred; saw such a large jump in the number of high-earners.

The public service layoffs will perhaps come at the cost of front-line services provided by employees who earn lower wages, said Larry Rousseau, VP of the Public Service Alliance of Canada in the Ottawa region.

“I think it’s very, very worrying that we are hindering the government of Canada’s capacity to deliver services to Canadians, while at the same time we don’t seem to be doing it throughout (the public service),” he said.
