A skier died in an accident in California on Tuesday. Since 2009, 32-year-old Michael Ungar was a trainer at the Niagara Skydive Centre in Dunnville, Ont. The man belonged to Alymer, Ont.
Allegedly, the accident took place as Ungar tried to attempt an unsafe maneuver known as “swooping” and fell onto the ground at Perris Valley Skydiving, about 115 kilometres east of Los Angeles. In the world of skydiving, swooping is a speedy dive to glide over the ground before lifting up and landing normally.
“Well, it was very tragic skydiving accident,” said Tim Grech, owner of Niagara Skydive Centre.
Grech called Ungar a healthy, young and athletic guy. He said: “He was a very experienced skydiver. I’ve known him for about five years and he worked here for the last two. He just finished in October.”
As soon as the firefighters arrived at the scene, they tried to perform CPR on Ungar; however, failed to revive him.
According to a witness, Ungar was circling as he came close to the ground, but didn’t halt or rotate his body upright when he approached the ground, signifying he was in trouble.
He crashed into the ground and disappeared behind an airplane.
