A recent report indicates the deterioration of the job quality in Canada. According to the report of CIBC World Markets published Wednesday, the state of affairs is worse than it was a year ago.

“The impact of a softening pace of job creation is exacerbated by a worsening level of job quality in the Canadian labour market,” Benjamin Tal, CIBC World Markets’ deputy chief economist, said in the report.

Tal also said that near the end of last year, Canada had the weakest job market on record in any non-recessionary time. The report further claims that self-employment grew by two per cent in 2011, double the speed of paid employment.

“From a quality perspective, the surge in self-employment reduces the overall quality of employment, largely due to the fact that, on average, a self-employed person earns 10 per cent to 15 per cent less than a regular employee,” Tal said.

In the meantime, even though full-time employment increased by 1.5% in 2011 in contrast to a decrease of 0.3% in part-time jobs, the number of high-paying full-time jobs grew by only 0.4%.

Moreover, higher paying sectors such as public administration, chemical manufacturing, computer and electronic manufacturing, petroleum and coal manufacturing, transportation and mining all reported net job losses during the year.
