Judges have decided not to allow cameras in the courtroom when former hockey coach Graham James will be sentenced. Judge Catherine Carlson made the announcement to ban all the live TV cameras for Tuesday’s hearing.

She said: “This case is highly charged enough. It’s not going to become a spectacle. The court also has serious concerns about setting precedent in a sexual assault case.”

James is to be sentenced on two counts of sexual assault. He confessed in December of sexually assaulting former NHL star Theoren Fleury and Todd Holt, Fleury’s younger cousin during the 1980s and early ’90s.

On the other hand, a number of media organizations voiced their opinion Friday alleging that general public must know how James looks like, as he has always been covering his face when brought in front of media.

The media, represented by lawyer Bob Sokalski, said: “The public has a right to know who has been convicted and what they look like … so the public can know and protect themselves!”

However, those supporting the ban of cameras state that James’ pictures would do nothing but put him in more trouble. In evidence, James’ lawyer Evan Roitenberg told the media that he was informed by RCMP that someone had threatened to kill James.

He said: “The threat was real, substantial and quite deadly. Mr. James has taken pains to shield his identity. Why? Because of security.”
