The room booked at the Old Mill Inn for a meeting between the TTC and residents’ living near several stations, complaining about increased subway vibration, was filled at Thursday night. 100 plus complainers gathered to hear the TTC’s strategy for addressing the radically increasing vibrations in homes around the Keele and Jane stations.

According to the reports submitted to TTC by Aercoustics Engineering Ltd. in July, the failing wheels and rails have amplified vibrations four times at Jane since 2000, and three times at Keele since 2005. A resident living near Keele, Kirk Lum, stated that “when I moved in six years ago, we never heard anything,” and “now glasses rattle in our cupboards.”

All the heads of TTC, including Chairperson Karen Stintz, CEO Andy Byford and Deputy Chief Operations Jim Teeple, were present at the meeting along with Area Councilor Sarah Doucette and several Aercoustics representatives. Aercoustics Engineer, Marc Bracken, declared that proper maintenance can allow the vibrations to return to a livable condition of seven years ago.

Byford claims that TTC is now aware of the situation and will do everything in its power to fix the problem as soon as possible. He stated that “I’m not going to stand here and say we’re going to eradicate all the noise,” declaring that “It’s going to take some time.”

Doucette mentioned in an irritated tone that “the timelines are too broad” and she wants “definite months.” Replied to which Byford promised he will “make damn sure we give these people a specific date as soon as we get one.”
