Second time on Monday, local authorities called on the RCMP explosives disposal unit (EDU) for examining a possible explosive device as a “suspicious item” was discovered on the mezzanine level of the New Westminster SkyTrain Station by an attendant around 8 p.m.

Following the threat, the station was quickly evacuated and shut down for public as the EDU reached almost around 10 p.m. EDU started examining the suspicious item discovered on the middle floor of the three-floor building. Transit Police Sgt., Dan Young, shared that “there was a suspicious item brought to our attention by a SkyTrain attendant” and “they’re going to take a further look at it.” SkyTrain car system was still functioning in all neighboring stations on Monday night, though all the buses passed over New Westminster Station without stopping until the threat was neutralized.

Just three hours before the incident, i.e. precisely 7 p.m., an alleged explosive was left abandoned in front of a home in Tsawwassen’s Beach Grove neighborhood that was then destroyed by the EDU, while the block was evacuated by the police. At that time, the action was a result of a similar call to the Delta police at almost 2:45 p.m. telling that a “suspicious package” has been witnessed outside a house in the 1300-block of Farrell Avenue.  Delta Police Const. Ciaran Feenan, shared with the media at 7:30 p.m. that “the RCMP conducted a controlled explosion of the device” and “at this point, it’s believed to be an explosive device, but an investigation is underway to determine (that).”
