The Immigration Minister of Canada, Jason Kenney, clearly announced during an interview that recent approvals of his government to allow foreign investment in the country is “absolutely not” related to giving these foreign companies an allowance of bringing in temporary foreign workers. Though, he did also admit that mistakes were made in a case involving Chinese-owned mining company in B.C.

Kenny was summarizing his activates of this year-end in an interview, where he decided to unambiguously correct any perception that are being made in view of government’s decision of allowing deals, like Chinese state oil firm CNOOC’s takeover of Alberta’s Nexen Inc., being in any case related to the recent approval of allowing more temporary foreign workers. He clarified saying that “let me say categorically we completely oppose the idea of facilitating access to large-scale temporary foreign workers for developments owned by foreign companies.” He added that “this is not about a labour camp approach to filling labour needs — that’s absolutely totally forbidden in this country. We will not permit that to happen.”

Kenney admitted, giving an opinion, that the government made a mistake when Human Resources and Skills Development Canada allowed 200 Chinese miners to be staffed for the Murray River coal project in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. He claimed that “is it possible that from time to time, labour market opinions have been approved without an adequate search for Canadians? Yes.” “And that’s one of the reasons we’ve been doing a review for several months. It’s one of the reasons we’re taking a closer look at that particular mining development.”
