It took almost eleven firefighters to put down a door and drill through a pathway within almost roof -high piles of garbage inside a home in Burnaby, B.C., for rescuing an elderly man pinned under it. The almost 70-years-old man remained under the heap of garbage for at least three days, after which the RCMP was called in by the by the neighbors of the house in eastern Vancouver on Monday night, who had not seen their neighbor  for several days.

Police further requested assistance from the Burnaby Fire Department, members of which reached later that night and helped gaining access to the house. Assistant Fire Chief, Greg Mervin, mentioned that his team found “quite a mess” before discovering the trapped man. He alleged that “these fellows had to go in and try and find a problem there, and they had to dig through to find this fellow.” The man, who was suffering from severe dehydration at the time, was quickly shifted to nearby hospital where he is being treated for possible circulation problems in both legs.

Mervin further disclosed that the house did not have any heat or electricity, while adding that “had it been another day or two, with our cold temperatures, the outcome may have not been as good as it was. It was probably very rewarding for these firefighters.” Mervin alleged that fire department comes across dangerous hoarding situations about a few times a year, and “I wouldn’t say it’s a regular occurrence” and “there’s probably a few more people out there that we don’t know about. Until something happens, it’s not discovered.”
