The Minister for International Co-operation, Julian Fantino, has made an official announcement on Wednesday declaring that Canada has decided to more than double its aid for victims of violence in Syria. Fantino promised another $25 million in aid to Syria, which now overall brings Canada’s contribution to more than $48 million, while he was addressing the first High-Level International Humanitarian Pledging Conference in Kuwait.

Fantino alleged that Canada is persistent in supporting humanitarian partners via its International Development Agency. He alleged that Canada is determined to provide aid to the people affected by the Syrian crisis, especially the ones who had no choice but to seek refuge in the neighboring countries like Jordan. It is believed that nearly 700,00 people have already fled from Syria to other countries since 2011. Fantino asserted that this assistance will be delivered through Canadian humanitarian organizations and international agencies.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made a public appeal on Wednesday for ending the violence and urged for more aid in order to attend the disastrous crisis which is getting worse by the day. In a recent incident almost 65 people were found shot dead in the northern city of Aleppo. Fantino was addressing the media via teleconference, when he claimed that approx. 60,000 people have so far lost their lives in the Syrian violence, while another four million are awaiting help inside Syria. He categorically admired Jordan for providing shelter to so many Syrian families. He stated that “all countries must bring pressure on [President Bashar al-] Assad to go.”
