A conservative cabinet minister, Peter Penashue, has made the announcement of resigning from his parliament seat and compete again in a byelection after confessing that his campaign received “ineligible” donations during his latest election. The surprise announcement made on Thursday, stated that Penashue has decided to resign as an MP for Labrador and as minister of intergovernmental affairs, along with his position as president at the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, and will now rerun in a bid to clear the air around his 2011 election win.

Penashue mentioned in his official statement, that “although I was unaware of the inaccuracies in the return, I believe I must be accountable to the people who elected me and therefore I am stepping down as the Member of Parliament for Labrador and will seek re-election through a byelection.” Sources also confirm that The Conservative Party of Canada has already paid back an estimated amount of the ineligible contributions, i.e. $30,000, to the federal government. Penashue held an “inexperienced” volunteer to be responsible of the alleged mistake, namely former agent Reg Bowers, admitting that he accepted illegal donations.

Whereas the alleged party worker, Bowers, also announced on Thursday to quit as a board member of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, which is a patronage post he was granted several months after the 2011 election. The Liberal rival who lost to Pensahue by just 79 votes, Todd Russell, asserted that the alleged spending had a “huge outcome” in the Conservative victory in the riding.
