Local police made an arrest at the Casablanca Motor Inn in Brandon on Sunday, taking an American fugitive into custody who was wanted by the FBI for kidnapping. 51-year-old Monty Turner, from Longmont, Colo., was arrested almost two hours after he checked in at the motel with his three-year-old son. Colorado reporters claim that Turner is accused of attacking his estranged wife with pepper spray and a stun gun before taking the boy from her home.

Motel manager, Bernie Hiebert, reported that “they looked pretty tired both of them,” and “he says ‘We can use some sleep’ and I checked them in. They didn’t look suspicious or anything.” He explained that Turner used a credit card for payment, furnished his driver’s licence and provided all information on the motel registration sheet. Hiebert also added that the boy didn’t seem frightened or upset. Almost two hours later, when Hiebert saw the police making an arrest, he alleged that “I couldn’t believe it.”

The Brandon Police Service has alleged to have been coordinating with the federal Department of Justice, Manitoba Justice, the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. authorities. The child has been given in the custody of Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba. The kidnapped boy’s mother, Brandy Turner, informed Colorado reporters on Saturday afternoon that she suspects that “he definitely had a plan,” because “he had the pepper spray. He had the Taser. He had a bike with a baby seat on it. It appears that he had somebody waiting with a vehicle.”
