Quebec Premier Pauline Marois made an important announcement on Wednesday declaring that the Quebec government will urgently arrange almost $60 million in order to aid the homes and businesses of people affected in the destructive oil-train explosion at Lac-Mégantic. Premier Pauline alleged that the government is eager to support the municipality to deal with the emergency situation, asserting that “all of Quebec is in mourning.” She made the announcement soon after attending an exclusive cabinet meeting on the situation in Lac-Mégantic.

Furthermore, the Premier announced that she has ordered the flags on the National Assembly and government buildings throughout the province to be kept at half-mast from Thursday onwards for a seven-day period. Additionally, she informed to have requested the Prime Minister to help Quebec at this time of need, hoping that the federal government would also contribute to the aid and rebuilding effort. Marois pointed out that railway transport in Canada is under federal jurisdiction, so Ottawa has an obligation to offer assistance to alleviate the impact of “this tragedy.”

The premier revealed that she has planned to meet Lac-Mégantic Mayor, Colette Roy-Laroche, on Thursday to discuss the provincial relief plan. Previously, Finance Minister Nicolas Marceau had announced that “we will find the resources” to rebuild Lac-Mégantic. He added that “the government will do all that is necessary,” and that “the government is completely committed to helping the families, relatives, the community to recover from this tragedy.” Meanwhile, Environment Minister Yves-François Blanchet alleged that “the ecosystems are not irremediably compromised.” But he added, “There will always be a trace of what has happened. It cannot be erased.”
