Upon observing that former Laval Mayor and accused gangster, Gilles Vaillancourt, was not present at his court hearing on Wednesday, the court made sure that it did not happen again. Even though usually accused criminals are not forced to appear in court during every step of the legal proceeding until the preliminary hearing and the trial are underway. However, Justice Gilles Garneau made a special exception in this case as he demanded that former Laval Mayor, Gilles Vaillancourt, and his 36 co-accused to be present in court.

Commenting on the decision, Prosecutor Claude Dusseault stated that “that’s the judge’s decision that they have to be here. It’s the judge’s prerogative and his decision.” In response to the decision, one of the accused requested court to excuse him from the obligation asserting that he has booked a vacation. However, the judge was not impressed to hear the request, responding to which, he told the accused to appear, asserting that “I would find it indecent to see the accused resting under the sun while they should be working on their defence. The accused can take his cruise at another time.”

Vaillancourt and two of his accomplices are primarily charged with gangsterism and accusations of operating a comprehensive kickback scheme that skimmed money from every public works project in Laval for decades. While the remaining 34 accused men are charged for being complicit in the scheme to various degrees. Apart from that, court hearing was a pretty routine matter on Wednesday, when lawyers confirmed which client or clients they were representing in the case.
