Soon after strong rainstorms frayed through southern Quebec on Saturday morning, Hydro Quebec confessed that more than 276,000 clients were deprived of electricity. It was on Friday afternoon when residents suffered a burst of high winds, torrential rains and thunder and lightning throughout Montreal region, which resulted in numerous fallen tree branches, damage to Hydro Quebec equipment and even tornado warnings. Analysts revealed that up to 30 millimetres of rain fell in 15 minutes, which caused small flash floods in the Montreal region.

A representative of Hydro Quebec, Louis-Olivier Batty, stated that “we have… people working on the field and we also have crews coming from the east of Quebec to help.” It was explained that more crews from the U.S. en route were brought to southern Quebec to help out. However, Batty was unable to assure how soon power will be restored to all customers. Incidents in Boucherville lead to the death of 21-year-old woman and municipal employee, when a tree branch fell at an outdoor pool. During its peak hours, the storm resulted in power outages for more than half a million Hydro Quebec subscribers.

Even though there was no detection of tornadoes in Quebec by Environment Canada, its meteorologist, René Héroux, explained that there were microbursts and small twisters. He elucidated that “most of the damage was due to microbursts, that means straight-line winds. Of course there may have been some small twisters here and there, but those were really short duration.”
