Police revealed on Wednesday that a drunken Canadian intending to prove his name in swimming triggered an international rescue mission after jumping into the Detroit River from Canada’s shore and swimming all the way through to the United States. 47-year-old John Morillo informed reporters after being freed by the authorities on Tuesday that he now thinks the stunt was “very stupid,” but he is happy to now be able to boast to friends about his exploit.

Morillo explained that “I was drinking, but I wasn’t really drunk,” while alleging that “the thing is, I’ve been telling people I’m going to swim across the river for years and they’re like ‘yah, yah, blah, blah, you can’t make it.’ So, I don’t know, last night I just decided it was the time to go.” Authorities revealed that Morrillo allegedly swam across the river separating Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, and after snapping few pictures, he was going to head back when he noticed a stir around him. Morillo’s neighbor in Canada had informed local police when they saw him swimming away into the mist, which triggered a search in the middle of the night involving Canadian police, along with both US and Canadian coast guards, three boats and a helicopter.

Later eventually Morillo was found on the Canadian side of the Detroit River at 12:50 am local time (0450 GMT), almost two hours after he first jumped into the river. He stated that “as soon I saw the helicopters going by and the boats looking for me, I was like ‘oh, this is really stupid.'”
