The observance of annual Labor Day parade in Windsor was carried out in somewhat different manner this year. The most prominent variation was the presence of newly formed Unifor, which has turned out to be the country’s largest private sector union after the integration of CAW and Communications, Energy and Paperworkers. The gigantic number of members of the new, combined union wore red t-shirts with the Unifor logo and name written across the front.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers also had a quite noticeable parade this year. Local 630 president of the CUPW, who represents almost 450 local postal workers, Jeff Carroll, revealed that his union fears Canada Post will cut services and jobs. Carrol stated that “it was a great honour to lead the parade, knowing that the labour community in Windsor knows we’re in a hell of a fight.” Members of several other local unions also made their way from Walker Road to the Fogolar Furlan Club.

The former CAW national president, Ken Lewenza, marched along with local Unifor colleagues in their red and white t-shirts. Lewenza stated that “it’s a day for the labour movement to rally around the union movement and it’s also an opportunity to say to workers that are unorganized that there’s a union advantage when you join a union.” A union retiree and former president of the Windsor and District Labour Council, Gary Parent, stated that “it’s our day to re-commit ourselves to the struggle that’s ahead of us and to unite like we’ve never done before. So that challenge is up to you.”
