Authorities have charged a Vancouver police officer with assaulting a cyclist after a video of the act emerged on the internet. The incident took place in downtown Vancouver in March, where Const. Ismail Bhabha was handcuffing cyclist Adishea Akhavan because he was riding without a helmet and had ran a red light. A video recorded by a bystander shows that when the cyclist asks the officer, “what is this for?”  Bhabha winds up and punches Akhavan in the head that leaves him with a tooth through his lip.

The video of the incident quickly spread over the internet through social media resources, like Facebook, and was able to ignite a widespread outrage. Consequently, the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner ordered West Vancouver police to investigate the incident. However, a spokesperson of Vancouver police, Rollie Woods, explained that the officer is innocent until proven guilty, while highlighting that the video fails to show what may have happened before Bhabha punched Akhivan.

Woods stated that “whenever there’s video evidence, no matter how bad it may look, you have to really wait until you get the whole investigation, all of the evidence, before you decide.” It was elucidated that “it’s really just one piece of evidence. Admittedly, that clip does not look very good. It’s concerning.” The assault charge was laid against Bhabha this morning in provincial court in Vancouver. Vancouver police Sgt. Randy Fincham said Bhabha is still at work but has been moved to another location within the force.
