RCMP Const. M-J Burroughs revealed in a press conference that a six-year-old boy passed away today on Friday morning in St. Albert as he was hit by a school bus while walking to school. It was explained that the Grade 2 student was crossing the street at 8:40 a.m. about 200 metres from École Marie Poburan, a French immersion Catholic elementary school at 100 Sir Winston Churchill Avenue, when a bus loaded with school children made a right turn. The crash took place at Sir Winston Churchill Avenue and Woodlands Road, soon after which the boy died from his injuries at the spot.

Burroughs alleged that “he was a student at Marie Poburan,” and that “the family has been notified but out of respect the deceased name will not be released at this time. The RCMP traffic analyst along with the St. Albert RCMP are on scene and investigation is ongoing.” Witnesses report that a long yellow school bus from First Student Canada still remains at the scene along with two RCMP cruisers, two St. Albert fire services vehicle and a tow truck. Moreover, it was reported that police officers were seen taking measurements and photographs.

According to the superintendent of Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, David Keohane, her school has arranged counsellors to support students and families at the school. Keohane added that “this accident is an immense loss to all who knew the victim and will have a profound effect on the school.” He alleged that “our heartfelt condolences are extended to the family and friends and classmates of this child.”
