Several sources have confirmed that the RCMP will be formally laying fraud-related charges against former senator, Mac Harb, and suspended senator, Patrick Brazeau, as part of their ongoing investigation into the Senate scandal. A statement issued by the RCMP announced that the Assistant Commissioner and the Commanding Officer of the RCMP’s National Division, Gilles Michaud, will host a press conference on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and provide an “update” on the Senate investigation.

Court documents revealed last month alleged that the RCMP Corporal, Greg Horton, found that Mr. Harb had two mortgages against a home outside Ottawa, of which he only owned 0.01 per cent but still claimed it as his primary residence, and hence billed Senate expenses for a “secondary” residence in the city. According to The RCMP documents, the remaining 99.99 per cent stake in the Cobden, Ont., home was sold by Mr. Harb to Magdalene Teo, i.e. a diplomat from Brunei stationed in Canada, few hours after the first mortgage was secured.

Whereas, a sworn affidavit filed in court on Aug. 1 by the RCMP alleged that the Mounties also investigated Mr. Brazeau for alleged breach of trust over living and travel expense claims that he submitted for more than two years between early-2011 and 2013. The documents showed that he did not own or live in the rural Quebec home which was designated as his primary residence so he could charge taxpayers for living expenses in Ottawa from April, 2011 onwards. However, none of these allegations in the RCMP documents have been tested in court.
