A statement issued by the office of Chief Medical Health Officer (CMHO), Fraser Health, has confirmed to have encountered two unvaccinated children in B.C.’s Fraser Valley who are affected by the extremely contagious measles virus, putting others in the community at risk. The statement issued on Saturday and updated on Monday alleged that the exposure took place at a school in Chilliwack, B.C., i.e. a community with traditionally low immunization rates, and so the potential for this virus to spread is very concerning.

Fraser Health revealed that the two confirmed cases were found in the city, i.e. approximately 100 kilometres east of Vancouver, hence it is following up as many as 100 suspected cases among children in the community. CMHO Dr. Paul Van Buynder stated that “vaccination coverage in the whole of British Columbia is appalling” because “it’s nowhere near enough to protect the community and we need to do better as a group.”

Sources claim that vaccinations are rare in the area due to strong religious beliefs as Members of the Reformed Congregation of North America believe vaccinations expose the body to potential harm. In light of the two cases, Mount Cheam Christian School decided to close early ahead of March Break. The father of the two children infected, Jan Neels, is also the principal of the school, and mentioned that “we’re working closely together with Fraser Health, the local health authority.” However, he did add that the experience has not changed his mind about vaccines.
