Ottawa police has confirmed to have been investigating a stabbing incident related to a Russian diplomat. Sources confirm that two cars with diplomatic plates were witnessed near the location of the incident on Stewart Street in Ottawa on Friday morning. Ottawa police claims that the stabbing took place at an apartment building near the Russian embassy, where 44-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries. Additionally, another man was in custody and being interviewed.
According to information provided by Ottawa Police Constable Chuck Benoit, the matter is still under investigation and not all of the details surrounding the incident are collected. Benoit stated that “at 8:43 a.m., Ottawa police received a call to assist regarding a male that received injuries. There were allegations of a stabbing although we cannot confirm that.” Furthermore, it was added that “the male was assisted by ambulance and there are non-life threatening injuries.”
It is believed that a man identifying himself as a Russian interpreter arrived at the building on Friday morning but was not immediately let inside. Ottawa Police Sergeant, Murray Knowles, refused to confirm whether the victim was linked to the Russian embassy, asserting that police is not at liberty to discuss where the victim of a crime works. When inquired about the presence of RCMP at the scene, Sgt. Knowles alleged that “there are lots of people associated to various embassies that live in here.” He added that police have co-operation from the victim “at this point,” though he did not confirm reports alleging that the stabbing was linked to a fight.
