After spending less than two years as the Premier of Alberta, owing to her impressive victory in the 2012 election, Alison Redford announced Wednesday to resign from her position effective this Sunday evening. However, Redford chose to remain in the legislature as the MLA for Calgary-Elbow. Consequently, the caucus is expected to select an interim premier soon during an intense meeting on Thursday morning.

Approaching the podium inside the Alberta Legislature to make the announcement on Wednesday night, Redford revealed to have decided to give up her position with “profound optimism for Alberta’s future” amid increasing disorder within the Progressive Conservative government. Since two Tory MLAs announced to quit the party in recent weeks, Redford alleged that the very public questions of caucus allegiances and leadership style began distracting her from the important work of the government, such as the balanced budget.

While making the announcement amid applause from MLAs on all sides of the political spectrum, Redford stated that “as leader of this government and this party, that has weighed heavily on my mind.” Redford alleged to have put her heart and soul into the job and stated “quite simply, I am not prepared to allow party and caucus infighting to get in the way of building a better future for our province and for all Albertans.” She added that “that is why I am announcing today, that with a profound optimism for Alberta’s future, I am resigning as premier of Alberta effective this Sunday evening.”
