iran releases canadian professor homa hoodfarIranian authorities have apparently freed Canadian-Iranian university professor, Homa Hoodfar, after keeping her in solitary detention for almost four months. According to Omani media, Prof. Hoodfar arrived in Muscat on Monday and reunited with her niece, Amanda Ghahremani.

Since Canada does not have any diplomatic presence in Iran since 2012, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau thanked Oman, Italy and Switzerland for their help in the case. The release of Prof. Hoodfar has come after the family claimed that her condition is very poor and she could barely walk or talk. Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Denver, Nader Hashemi, commented on the situation that “I suspect her health is very bad and the Iranian regime feared that if she died while in custody, it would be a PR disaster for the Islamic Republic.”

During the United Nations General Assembly last week, Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion reportedly met her Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, and discussed “consular cases.” According to a friend of Prof. Hoodfar, her family was instructed by the Canadian government not to comment on the situation immediately.

Concordia University professor, Margie Mendell, also mentioned in her remarks that “she’s very frail, she looks extremely thin … and very worn,” adding that “I suspect that she’s not in good health, but she’s free, she’s free and she’s out of Iran and she will get medical care and her medication.” Prof. Hoodfar has Canadian, Irish and Iranian citizenship.
