The Toronto Argonauts Football Club would like to congratulate seven Double Blue players on earning East Division All-Star honours in 2010. In all, there were two on offence, four on defence and one on special teams. This is the highest total for the Argos since the club finished in first place in 2007 and seven players were named Division All-Stars.

The Division All-Stars were selected by 69 voters, including members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC), CFL head coaches and CFL fans from across the country.

TORONTO’S 2010 EAST DIVISION ALL-STAR SELECTIONS:

OFFENCE
RB Cory Boyd
OT Rob Murphy

DEFENCE
DT Kevin Huntley
LB Kevin Eiben
DB Lin-J Shell
DS Willie Pile

SPECIAL TEAMS
KR/WR Chad Owens

RB Cory Boyd was named the Argos’ Most Outstanding Player and has now been recognized as one of the two best players at his position in the East Division. Boyd finished as the CFL’s second-leading rusher with 1,359 yards, scored eight (8) touchdowns (six rushing & two receiving) and was the club’s fifth-leading receiver (363 yards). Boyd led the CFL in yards from scrimmage with 1,722 and broke or matched several club records. This is the first time that Boyd has been named a division all-star.

LB Kevin Eiben earned the Argos’ nomination for Outstanding Canadian for the sixth time in his career and now he’s been named an East Division All-Star for the fifth time as an Argo (2004-07, 2010). He was named CFL Player of the Month in August, was runner-up for the monthly award in July, and runner-up for Canadian Player of the Week during weeks 4 & 8. He started all 18 games this season serving as the team’s starting WLB as well as the holder on field goals. His 100 defensive tackles led the Argos, were third in the CFL, and he finished third on the team with two interceptions. Eiben continues to establish himself among the greatest linebackers in league history and is in close pursuit of 700 career defensive tackles.

DT Kevin Huntley is a mountain of a man who has led the Argos in quarterback sacks in each of the last two regular seasons. Coach Barker referred to him earlier this season as the best defensive tackle in the league and his nine sacks in 2010 tied him for fourth in the CFL, third in the East. He had two multi-sack games this season and finished second among Argos defensive linemen with 41 tackles. This the first time that Huntley has been named an East All-Star.

OT Rob Murphy was voted the nastiest player in the CFL by his peers and was named the Argos’ Most Outstanding Lineman. He is now an East Division All-Star for the first time in his career. Voted captain of the line at the start of the season, he has more than exceeded expectations. Murphy started 16 games this season, protecting his quarterback’s blindside and helped spring star RB Cory Boyd for a league-leading 1,722 yards from scrimmage. This is the fourth time in his career that he has been named division all-star (three-time West All-Star in 2006-08), his first as an Argo.

WR/KR Chad Owens was arguably the most exciting player in the 2010 CFL regular season and was recognized as the team’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. Owens was busy re-writing team and league record books all year and was recently recognized by his peers as being the biggest threat to score from anywhere on the field. The Fly’n Hawaiian led the CFL in combined yards (3288), punt return yards (1,060), punt return average (12.6), kickoff return yards (1,216), kickoff return average (22.9), missed field goal return yards (425) and tied for league lead with four (4) kick return touchdowns (4). He also became the fifth player in league history to accumulate 1,000 punt and kickoff return yards in a season. This is the first time Owens has been named a Division All-Star.

DS Willie Pile was the ‘heart and soul’ of the Argonauts’ defence while playing in all 18 regular season games. He was Toronto’s big-play man who was counted on to make game-saving interceptions and unassisted third down stops all season long. Pile, who was voted the team’s defensive captain, tied fellow all-star Lin-J Shell for the team-lead, tied for second-most in the East, with four interceptions for 15 yards, collected two fumble recoveries for 14 yards, forced two fumbles and knocked away three passes. He finished second on the team, tied for third in the CFL, with 83 tackles and contributed on special teams with four tackles. Pile added two quarterback sacks and three tackles for loss to his totals. This is the first time Pile has been named a Division All-Star.

Second-year DB Lin-J Shell has been sensational for the Argonauts. He was a stalwart in a defence that allowed a league-low 24.6 points per game and finished second in the East in interceptions (19). Shell tied fellow all-star Willie Pile for the team lead, tied for second-most in the East, with 4 interceptions for 49 yards. Shell forced a fumble, knocked down three passes, finished fifth on the Argos with 63 tackles and pitched in on special teams with two (2) tackles. This is the first time Shell has been named a Division All-Star.
