Tennis’ female elite will grace the courts of Toronto, Ont. on August 6-14, 2011 for Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, and the infamous player line-up is slated to include Venus and Serena Williams.

“Venus and I are thrilled to come to Toronto this summer to play at Rogers Cup,” said 13-time Grand Slam singles champion, Serena Williams, who won her first-round match at Wimbledon earlier today. “I am excited to compete for the Rogers Cup championship. Toronto is such a beautiful city and the Canadian fans are very supportive.”

There is a great deal of anticipation for the Williams sisters, especially considering both ladies have missed almost all of the 2011 tournaments due to injuries. Wimbledon marks Serena’s first Grand Slam event of the year and Venus’ first Grand Slam since the 2011 Australian Open. Tournament Director Karl Hale is very pleased with the caliber of players that are expected to participate in Toronto this summer.

“We have a tremendous field this summer at Rogers Cup,” said Hale during a Rogers Sportsnet FAN 590 interview from Wimbledon earlier this week. “I talked with Venus and Serena over the weekend and they’re coming. They’re excited about being in Toronto so we’re going to see some great matches.”

New for 2011, Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will be virtually combined, with the men’s and women’s tournaments taking place on the same week (August 5-14) in Montreal and Toronto respectively. This innovative format guarantees that the Canada will be on the global stage, as top elite athletes from around the world compete for the title of Rogers Cup
champion.

“One of the common denominators is that they [the Williams sisters] missed tennis over the past year,” added Hale. “They’re really excited to get back on the court and play a lot of tennis over the next couple of years. They’re hungrier than ever to get out and achieve on the tennis court, which will be good for Rogers Cup.”

Serena is currently scheduled to play her first match in Toronto on Tuesday August 9, during the evening session, while Venus’ first match is still to be determined (matches and players are subject to change).
