From Saturday, June 2 to Sunday, June 3, 2012, the Wychwood Barns Community Gallery will feature PEDRO ALDERETE, a presentation of a selection of works by the late artist. The exhibition will feature 20 pieces including paintings, portraits and mixed media from the Cuban visual artist's body of work, several of which will be on display for the first time. Some of the works will be available for purchase. This exhibition is open to the public and admission is free.
"The subjects that Pedro explored through his chosen media were inspired from the place he left – Cuba, and his immediate surroundings. He used a variety of sources, symbols and imagery from letters and interviews of people, ads on Cuban tourism, military photos and found materials. His work also intertwined with the culture of Yoruba," said Janet Bellotto, Curator of Alderete's exhibition at Fleck Dance Theatre in 2010. Alderete explained that Yoruba is a culture "in which tales of deities with their stories of warfare and love are intertwined and orally passed from generation to generation (over continent and millennia)."

The Community Gallery at the Artscape Wychwood Barns is available to rent by the day or week for visual arts exhibitions, as performance or rehearsal space for all disciplines or as a gathering space for public or private events. This gallery is run entirely by volunteers of the Wychwood Heights Community Association (WBCA).
