Here is why Taapsee Pannu chose to star in Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk

Taapsee Pannu is shooting for Sujoy Ghosh’s thriller Badla in Scotland which also stars Amitabh Bachchan. The Pink actress has been shooting for films back to back and has two films out for release within 3 weeks of each other. Soorma, which released this Friday, will see Taapsee play the character of Harpreet Kaur, an Indian field hockey player, opposite Diljit Dosanjh’s Sandeep Singh, whereas the Anubhav Sinha helmed courtroom drama, Mulk will see Taapsee play the role of a defense lawyer.

Mulk is based on one of the most controversial topics not just in India, but the world; Islamophobia.  An issue, as sensitive and controversial as this, a lot of people were wary about the way it would be received by the audience. However, Taapsee wanted things to change and therefore decided to act in the film. She wanted to be the voice for a cause that not everyone wants to be associated with; the cause of humanity. In order to get the point of view of Muslims who are ostracized as a whole due to Islamic terrorist activities, the Naam Shabana actress wanted to work in a film that would resonate in the minds of the audience in general.

Taapsee said, “It is very disturbing to see how one religion specifically, always seems to be targeted. Especially because of acts being performed by cowards who belong to the religion. I am so hurt and angry and disturbed by it all. The most key people who work with me, for me to help my career and streamline it all, from my manager, my driver, my PR are all Muslims and it is frustrating to see how the perception surrounding them. One cannot turn a blind eye to these things. So working for Anubhav Sir’s film was a way to vent my anger and get a chance to talk about it.”

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Mulk stars Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu,  Prateik Babbar, Neena Gupta, Rajat Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Ashutosh Rana, Prachee Shah Paandya, Vartika Singh, Ashrut Jain & Indraneil Sengupta. It is set to release on August 3, 2018.
