ReelWorld Film Festival expands to the City of Markham, hosting a second spring festival in 2014 in addition to its Toronto festival. The announcement was made to a packed theatre at last night’s opening gala of the 13th Annual ReelWorld Film Festival held at Famous Players Canada Square Cinemas in Toronto.
“I’m thrilled the ReelWorld Film Festival is expanding to Markham. As Canada’s most culturally diverse city, this festival is a great match for our Cultural and Diversity Plans. There’s strong Canadian content and productions from around the world. Our residents will benefit from ReelWorld-Markham 2014, and we’ll welcome visitors to enjoy the amazing caliber of films,” said City of Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
“Since launching ReelWorld Film Festival in 2001, I’ve always intended for it to be in Toronto and in other locations across the country. This additional three-day film festival will allow us to bring distinctive programming and the very best of ReelWorld Film Festival to our neighbours in Markham… the most culturally diverse community in Canada,” Actress Tonya Lee Williams, Founder and Executive Director of ReelWorld Film Festival said. “I look forward to working with business and community leaders in Markham to shape this annual event, and I thank his Worship Mayor Scarpitti and the Markham Councillors for their extremely warm welcome.”
ReelWorld Film Festival will host two festivals in 2014: a five-day event in Toronto and a three-day celebration of film in Markham. Both will showcase and promote the work of filmmakers and artists from racially diverse backgrounds including those who identify as being from Aboriginal, Asian, Black, Latino, Middle Eastern, South Asian and other visibly diverse communities. The timing, venue and programming for ReelWorld-Markham will be announced at a later date.
